pupils, staff members and parents for continuing to further the interests of the School, and uphold our values. My thanks also go to Miss Rainey OBE and to the Board of Governors for their invaluable support. My thanks go to Miss Henning, our magazine editor, and to Mr Young for undertaking the substantial role of proof-reading the entire publication, and for overseeing the process alongside Miss Henning. In this, our 80th anniversary year, I hope that you enjoy reading the articles and hearing about the wide range of achievements, activities and successes enjoyed within the Grosvenor Community. With very best wishes,
Welcome to the 2024-2025 edition of ‘Grosvenor in View’. This year marks a very special occasion in the history of our School, in that we celebrated the 80th anniversary of the founding of Grosvenor Grammar School. Whilst much has changed in the last 80 years, one could argue that our ethos has remained the same, and that we continue to promote our shared values of relationships, respect and responsibility. Throughout the magazine, I hope that you see the very essence of our School Vision, encapsulated within our Mission Statement: To inspire our pupils within a supportive, caring environment to be lifelong learners, enabling all pupils to realise their full potential and become tolerant and confident adults. My sincere thanks go to our wonderful

Mr Magill BSc, PGCE
was because I saw in him someone who took pride in doing his own job exceptionally well. I will miss Mr Magill’s common sense, his honesty and his integrity. All of these roles aside, Mr Magill has always been an enthusiastic and willing participant in extra-curricular activities. School Productions, Carol Service, sporting events – Mr Magill was always there in support of pupils and colleagues. Fitness and good health played a major part in Mr Magill’s involvement – he helped with the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme, coached rugby, and even dabbled in football every now and again. In the good old days of the 80s and 90s, Mr Magill looked after the Rambling Club for over 10 years, even completing a 5-day course in Mountain Leadership in 1990. That same Mountain Leadership Course apparently used to come in very handy when Mr Magill attended a number of residentials in Whitepark Bay over the years. Mr Magill has always said that the thing he will miss most is his connection to the pupils. Mr Magill has always gone the extra mile during his career, and this included visiting children at home to help them with their Chemistry or look after their pastoral needs when they were unable to get into school themselves. He has never sought recognition or glory for this, instead preferring to be safe in the knowledge that he has done as much as possible to take care of those children who needed most help. There is kindness in Mr Magill’s heart, and a recognition of loyalty to our School. On behalf of all of us, Mr Magill, I want to thank you for your forty-five years of service to education. You have enriched the lives of so many young people within your care. You have been beside us through highs and lows, and we will genuinely miss you. I hope that your retirement enables you to spend time with your family, including your granddaughter, with time left over for walks and maybe a few rounds of golf. All of us wish you continued good health and happiness.
In June 2025 we said a fond farewell to Mr Michael Magill, teacher of Chemistry for 45 years. Mr Magill’s long and distinguished career began with his graduation from Queen’s University in 1979, with a BSc in Chemistry, followed by his PGCE. His first job was in the Boys’ Model for one year, and then Cairnmartin Secondary School for 2 years. Mr Magill then joined Grosvenor High School – as it was known then - way back in 1983. Between then and 2025, Mr Magill has worked alongside 4 Principals - Ken Reid, John Lockett, Robin McLoughlin and myself. Mr Magill has held several posts of responsibility in Grosvenor over the years, one being Head of Year – or Year Teacher as it was known then- since 1989. He has always brought something unique to this role; emails have no place in the Michael Magill Year Team and instead, he has walked hundreds of miles around our School, talking to his team and speaking with his students. He has always known his Year Group inside out; and has always shown that he cares. He loved his data and he loved telling his pupils that they have progressed so many places in the Year Group since their last set of examinations. He has always found the positives in a child and was the first to defend any Form Class if they got labelled as troublesome. The second very important role that Mr Magill held for a number of years is Teacher in Charge of Central Supplies and Events. Mr Magill looked after the mini buses when we used to have them, was in charge of lockers, lost property, organising photographs and the stationery shop. The strangest job description ever, yet all important roles that Mr Magill carried out with great care. I know that Mr Magill will be greatly missed by all of us in his role as NASUWT rep. Over the years, Mr Magill and I have built up a really strong relationship of trust based on the fact that even though our separate roles meant that we have had to look at things from different perspectives at times, our common ground was that we have always tried to do what was in the best interests of our whole-school community. Mr Magill did respect the Principal’s role and has always given me my place, never making it personal. I have always said that the reason I listened to Mr Magill

effective learning environment. Known for his quiet encouragement and ability to connect with struggling students, he consistently inspired and challenged all learners, fostering a genuine passion for mathematics among his pupils. While Mr Kennedy’s departure was a great loss to Grosvenor, he left behind a strong legacy. As a supportive colleague, a skilled educator and a compassionate teacher, he will be greatly missed. He moved on to take up an exciting new role as Lead Practitioner for Mathematics at Hatch End High School in London, where his talents will undoubtedly continue to shine. As a department we were sorry to lose a teacher of Mr Kennedy’s calibre, but we will also miss his wisdom and expertise. We wish him and his family well as they embark on this new chapter. Mrs V Seaton Head of Mathematics
Mr Kennedy was appointed to the position of Teacher of Mathematics at Grosvenor Grammar School in April 2022. Prior to this, he had a successful industrial career as an electrical engineer with FG Wilson and Harland & Wolff; however, the appeal of teaching eventually led him to leave engineering and begin his career in education in 2001. Having taught in several schools in England, Mr Kennedy returned to his native Northern Ireland in September 2021, accepting a position at Integrated College Dungannon. Before this, he held the position of Head of Mathematics at Nower Hill High School in London, where he led the department with distinction. His time at Integrated College Dungannon was brief, as Grosvenor Grammar School quickly recognised his talent and appointed him to the teaching staff. He soon became a valued and respected member of the Mathematics Department. Mr Kennedy made a significant impact in the classroom. His deep understanding of both his subject and his pupils allowed him to create a positive and

Mr Robinson Permanent Teacher of Technology and Design
Can you tell us a little bit about your background? E.g. where did you study? Where have you worked before? I’m a proud former pupil of Grosvenor Grammar School, where I completed my A-Levels in 2007. My passion for creativity and innovation led me to study Product Design and Development at Queen’s University Belfast, graduating in 2010. Eager to inspire others, I pursued a PGCE at Edge Hill University in Ormskirk, England. My teaching journey began on the Isle of Man, where I spent two formative years before returning home to Northern Ireland. Over the years, I have had the privilege of teaching in a range of schools including Omagh Academy, Coleraine Grammar School, Belfast High School and Larne Grammar. I then spent five years at Cambridge House Grammar School, honing my craft and deepening my commitment to education. In September 2024, I came full circle, returning to Grosvenor Grammar School, this time as a teacher, ready to give back to the community that first sparked my love for learning. What made you decide to become a teacher? From a young age, I was drawn to creating and building, something that came naturally with a carpenter for a father. Watching him turning raw materials into something purposeful and beautiful, sparked my own love for making things. I’ve always been inspired by the idea of passing on knowledge and skills to others. My time at Grosvenor Grammar School further fuelled that passion. I was fortunate to have teachers who didn’t just educate, they inspired. Their influence played a big part in my decision to become a teacher myself. What are your interests outside school? When I’m not in the classroom, you’ll often find me in my home workshop, immersed in my latest project inspired by new ideas. Beyond the workshop, I treasure time spent with family and friends, especially with my wife and newborn son, who has brought a whole new kind of joy and perspective to life. I’m also
actively involved in my local church, where I’ve had the privilege of working with young people. Travel is another passion of mine; I have been fortunate to explore many corners of the world, meeting incredible people and experiencing diverse cultures along the way. Are you involved in any extra-curricular activities at GGS? I am actively involved in the LEGO Robotics Club, where we take part in the internationally renowned FIRST LEGO League. I have previously led a team that won the NI Finals, came 2 nd in the UK Finals and then competed in the World Finals in Detroit where we competed against teams from 148 countries. It is the largest STEM competition in the world and an incredible platform for young people to collaborate, The school building has changed a lot since I was here and the staff has changed, but it is definitely still Grosvenor. It has been a real pleasure getting to know both the pupils and the current staff, and there is something special about catching up with teachers who once taught me. The atmosphere remains warm and welcoming, with a strong sense of community and a shared commitment to high standards. It’s great to be back in a place that continues to inspire excellence. Can you tell us a few interesting, unusual or surprising facts about yourself? I built my son’s very first cot with my own hands—a project filled with love and sawdust, but it has yet to provide us with a full night’s sleep! I’m a lifelong Arsenal fan, loyal through every high and low, and I proudly stood in the stands cheering Northern Ireland at Euro 2016. I love driving and tackling the Stelvio Pass, with its sharp hairpins and stunning alpine views, it was one of the most thrilling drives I’ve ever done. I’ve seen Hamilton three times and I’d go again in a heartbeat. innovate, and grow in confidence and skill. What are your first impressions of GGS?

Ms C Hainsworth Permanent Teacher of Chemistry
Are you involved in any extra-curricular activities at GGS? I coach girls’ netball with the Year 8 pupils. Taking students for sports in a new experience for me and I have really enjoyed it. The girls are very enthusiastic and it has been great to see their skills improve over the year. What are your first impressions of GGS? Having taught at my previous school for 15 years it could have been daunting to start a new job, but I was greeted with a warm and welcoming atmosphere by both staff and pupils. Everyone has been so helpful and friendly and l particularly like that everyone says “Hello Miss” when I pass them in the corridors. Can you tell us a few interesting, unusual or surprising facts about yourself? I originally went to university to do a degree in Medicine but swapped to Chemistry after my first year. I always think it is important for students to remember it’s okay if they don’t know what they want to do after school. They should take their time to figure things out. A career path doesn’t have to be linear, and it’s perfectly fine to change directions as students discover more about themselves and their interests.
Can you tell us a little bit about your background? E.g. where did you study? Where have you worked before? I was living in Edinburgh until last year since moving there for university many years ago to study Chemistry. After completing my Chemistry degree, I went on to do my teacher training and got my first job as a teacher in a girls’ school in Edinburgh. I ended up staying there for 15 years becoming Head of Chemistry. I moved back to Northern Ireland last summer to be closer to family after having my little boy, Oliver. What made you decide to become a teacher? At university, I tutored younger students and really enjoyed the interaction and satisfaction when they were able to understand initially difficult topics, so after my Chemistry degree I decided to do teacher training. I enjoy being part of students’ lives and seeing them grow as they progress through school from children starting in Year 8 to young adults leaving in Year 14. What are your interests outside school? Since having a baby, I enjoy sleeping, though I never seem to get enough. If I have time, I like to do some baking and then sample my hard work with a nice cup of tea. I am also hoping to restart the ballet classes I enjoyed before the arrival of the baby.

Ms A Philpot Permanent Teacher of Religious Studies and Social Sciences
Are you involved in any extra-curricular activities at GGS? Music has been something I’ve been involved with my whole life and I love how it brings people together. One of the highlights of my first year at Grosvenor was working with the choir to prepare for the 80th Anniversary Concert. The talent we have at Grosvenor is outstanding, the quality of performances at the concert was amazing and I have never been so proud to belong to a school as when the choir sang ‘Gaelic Blessing’ in the Ulster Hall. I am in awe of Miss Foster’s The first thing to strike me about the students was the friendliness with which I was welcomed by my classes as a new member of staff. The staff immediately impressed me with how much they give of themselves to create such a rich school environment. Everyone can be guilty of taking their school days for granted, but Grosvenor is truly a great school, and having worked in a variety of schools before, I can safely say that Grosvenor is the best yet! Can you tell us a few interesting, unusual or surprising facts about yourself? When I was at University, studying Theology, I had to learn ancient Greek and Hebrew, but can barely remember a word of it now. When I didn’t have my head in the Septuagint, I was Secretary and then President of the Queen’s Debating Society, ‘The Literific’. As part of my role at the weekly debates I had to wear an academic robe and use an antique gavel. In sixth form I completed Grade 8 in jazz saxophone and went on to be in a Jazz Band. We toured Italy playing in some amazing venues. ability to pull off such a beautiful show. What are your first impressions of GGS?
Can you tell us a little bit about your background? E.g. where did you study? Where have you worked before? I studied Theology and Sociology at Queen’s University, Belfast before moving to England to begin my PGCE at University College, London. My first teaching job was in Oxford in 2016. I then moved to teach RS in an Independent Catholic Day School in Warwickshire. I then moved south to take up the post of Head of Year and Head of RS at a different school before I moved back to Northern Ireland in January 2023 when I was offered a Head of Department role in an Integrated school in Co Down. What made you decide to become a teacher? I remember wanting to be a teacher when I was in Primary school. My grandfather had an old chalkboard in his den and my sister and I used to play ‘school’ when we were little. I fell in love with Religious Studies when I was studying at Wallace High School during which time I was lucky to have been taught by so many amazing teachers. I was incredibly shy at school but my teachers supported me and pushed me to find more confidence, particularly through class debates, Spending time with my partner and family (including our 5 family dogs) on the North Coast is where I am happiest. My partner and I travel whenever we can with Crete being our favourite destination. I enjoy working with a local American Football Team, the Belfast Trojans, as their Youth Development Officer. To relax, I love to cook and make things for friends and family. I love reading fiction books and upcycling furniture or decorating my house. drama, choir or Model United Nations. CELEBRATING SUCCESS
80th Anniversary Celebrations The Academic Year 2024-25 was a special one in the life of the School as we marked 80 years since the school was founded by the Belfast Corporation. Back then, it was sited in Roden Street, off the Grosvenor Road, and remained there until 1958, when the present location was secured at Cameronian Drive. There were 112 pupils enrolled in Grosvenor in 1945 whereas we are now sitting above 1200 pupils. We took the opportunity City Hall Illuminated In GGS Colours
to mark this milestone in three distinct ways: Belfast City Hall was illuminated in GGS colours on 22 January 2025; we held a unique Spring Concert in the Ulster Hall in March; and the events were rounded off in style as we held a Gala Dinner in the Titanic Building on 31 May 2025. Sincere thanks to everyone who supported these various events.

best in his new post. Mr Magill retired as Teacher of Chemistry, having given more than 40 years of service to Grosvenor Grammar School. We pay tribute to Mr Magill’s immense commitment to his pupils, and I would like to thank him for his amazing contribution to Grosvenor, and for his support both to me personally, and to all of us. Miss Rainey, Mr Ferguson, Governors, colleagues, ladies and gentlemen and our pupils, I am delighted to present my Senior School Annual Report for the 2024 to 2025 academic year. I thank Miss Rainey for her very kind words and for her wonderful support as Chairperson of the Board of Governors. Welcome, everyone, to our Senior Prize Distribution. Turning our attention to teaching staff, we said goodbye last year to both Mr Mark Kennedy and to Mr Magill. pupils achieving at least 7 A* to C grades, including English and Mathematics. An exceptional total of 51 pupils achieved 8 or more A* to A grades, with 30 of those pupils attaining at least 9 A* to A grades. At A Level, 76% of students achieved at least 3 A* to C grades. An extremely impressive total of 29 students achieved 3 A grades or better, with 5 of those achieving 4 A grades or better. We are delighted that amongst our many gifted and talented students, we have Suzy Zhang who has taken up a place at the prestigious ‘Ecole Polytechnique’ in France; Finlay Moore is now studying at Cambridge and Lucy Storey has gained her place at the London School of Economics. I wish to pay tribute to our students who have continued to work so hard to achieve such amazing success. I also wish to express my sincere thanks to my colleagues, our teachers, whose efforts ensure the best outcomes for our students. Likewise, I thank our parents for the central role that you play in your son or daughter’s individual success and wellbeing. This year has marked a significant milestone in the School’s history, as we celebrated the 80th anniversary of the founding of Grosvenor Grammar School. Amongst the highlights of the year, we saw Belfast City Hall lit up in Grosvenor colours and the School community enjoyed a magnificent gala dinner, held in the Titanic Building in Belfast. Thanks to the huge efforts of Miss Foster and Mr Arnold in particular, we staged our Spring Concert in the iconic setting of the Ulster Hall. It was an evening of spectacular entertainment, following months of preparation for the rehearsals. We were delighted to be joined on the evening by the Renaissance Chamber Choir and the Grosvenor Chorale. Both the Gala Dinner and the Spring Concert provided lasting memories for our Grosvenor Grammar School community and we look forward to many other celebrations in the future. Given that we have had a packed year of events and extra-curricular activities, I am going to break with tradition this year at our Prize Distribution and deliver some of my report in a different fashion. In a few moments, you will get to see a video which showcases the wonderful array of talent, achievements and success that makes Grosvenor Grammar such a wonderful institution. The full details of my Annual Report will be available in the School Magazine which will appear online in the near future. Underpinning everything that you will see today is our School Vision, expressed within our Mission Statement: To inspire our pupils within a supportive, caring environment to be lifelong learners, enabling all pupils to realise their full potential and become tolerant and confident young adults. Last year, our pupils enjoyed a full programme of educational visits and sports tours. As well as our annual Year 8 day trips to Delamont and our surfing excursions to the North Coast, students of Modern Languages
travelled to Spain and Germany. The Religious Studies Department ran their first trip to Rome. We ran two separate ski trips for junior and senior pupils who travelled to Austria and Italy and had an unforgettable experience. Our senior rugby and boys hockey teams enjoyed a tour to Valencia, enjoying valuable time together as a team. My sincere thanks go to all staff members who give up their time to organise and participate in such events. Thank you for providing such an enriching opportunity for our pupils and helping to create memories that they will never forget. Over the course of the year, our students took part in so many events held in school and outside school, that it would be impossible to include them all in this report. The links to developing skills – and in particular career progression – are so apparent, from such wide-ranging activities as Politics visits to Stormont, to participation in COP29. Last year also saw us forge even greater links with our colleagues in the Confucius Institute at Ulster University, as well as with our colleagues in the Chinese Consulate. In November, pupils from Year 8 alongside pupils in Year 13 participated in an online session with students and distinguished participants from across China, the United Kingdom and France. As part of our ever-expanding programme of language and culture, two groups of parents participated in Mandarin evening classes. We received visits from a number of distinguished guests, including Mr Li, Nan (Chinese Consul General) and Professor Yu, Vice President of Hubei Normal University. Our links with the Confucius Institute and with the Chinese Consulate have provided so many new and amazing opportunities for our pupils, staff and parents and we are uniquely placed in Northern Ireland in terms of such special events. The Drama production of ‘Back to the 80s’ involved well over one hundred and thirty pupils from Year 8 to Year 14 and they played to packed audiences in each performance. Our thanks go to all pupils and members of staff who made the show such an amazing success, and in particular to our Director Mrs Young and Musical Director Mr Arnold. The Music Department led a full programme of amazing performances throughout the year. The School’s Annual Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols in St Anne’s Cathedral was an opportunity to worship and celebrate with family and friends, and we were so delighted to see such an ever-increasing number of former pupils amongst our choir numbers. As already mentioned, the Spring Concert has provided a lasting memory for our Grosvenor Community and has been mentioned frequently as the best experience that performers have enjoyed in recent history. The number of individual and group performances is too large to mention, but we pay tribute to all students, under the wonderful leadership of Miss Foster, Head of Music, Mr Arnold, and our music tutors. We look forward to the performances later today. Sport has also continued to be central to our pupils’ extra-curricular participation.

losing out, unfortunately, in the final of their Northern Ireland Bowl Competition. Our thanks go to Mrs Murdock and our netball coaches last year: Mrs Kirk, Mrs Hainsworth, Miss Lunny, Mrs Prior and Mrs Logan. Our Grosvenor cricket season was a fantastic combination of teamwork, talent and sporting spirit. Notable highlights came in the form of several semi finals, with the Under 12s losing out after a fine run of victories; the 2nd XI made the semi-final of the 2nd XI Cup; and the 1st XI lost narrowly in the Schools’ Plate semi-final. A special mention to the staff members: Mr White, Mr Winters, Mr Thompson, Mr Lendrum, Mr Hamilton, Mr McDowell, Mr Nelson and Mr Young, all of whom pour so much time, energy, commitment, and expertise into each team they take. In Athletics, Grosvenor pupils enjoyed considerable success in the Track and Field County Down District Championships, followed by the Ulster Schools’ Championships. Well done to our team of 6 Year 8 girls who finished in seventh place overall at the Year 8 Ulster Track and Field Competition. Further up the School, our athletes secured an amazing total of six gold medals at Ulster level, including Dominik Lipowski (Junior Boys Discus), Jacob Cochrane (Junior Boys’ Triple Jump), Emily Hobbs (Junior Girls Walk), Jude Glover (Intermediate Boys High Jump and Noah Harper (Intermediate Boys 1500 metres). Our Junior Boys 4 by 100 metres Relay Team, comprising Jacob Cochrane, Zayn Ahmed, Jeydhel Cabuhal, and Isiah Erhabor, performed superbly to claim a further gold medal. Elsewhere, Ben Sykes started off his amazing season with a silver medal in the Intermediate Boys 100 metres, while Eva Lasini performed impressively to claim bronze in the Mini Girls Shot Put. At the All-Ireland event, Jacob Cochrane performed superbly to win gold in the Junior Boys triple jump. Ben Sykes did not fail to impress once again, delivering a dominant display to achieve victory in the Intermediate Boys’ 100m event, equalling the Irish Schools’ record as he secured gold for the second consecutive year. The season did not end there for Ben Sykes, Noah Harper and Jude Glover. Noah and Jude represented Ulster at the Tailteann Games in the 1500 metres and high jump events respectively. Our Irish champion Ben Sykes represented the Irish Mens Under 20 team in the 4 by 100 metre relay in Germany in June. Alongside the accomplishments of our students, our school coaches deserve much praise for their superb commitment – Mr McDowell, Mrs Murdock, Mrs Kirk, Mr Thompson, Mrs Buchanan and Mr Nelson. In table tennis, we enjoyed another outstanding year. Amongst numerous successes for both boys and girls, our Under 19 Boys Team secured the Ulster Schools’ Table Tennis Team Championships and the Girls Under 19 Team secured a silver medal in the same competition. The Boys Team continued their run of success with victory in the Under 19s All Ireland Table Tennis Championships. As well as his team success, Karsten Close continued
In rugby, our teams faced many challenges against tough opposition, but the spirit remained strong through a full season of highs and lows, under the leadership of Mr McDowell as Master of Rugby, and with the support of Saturday rugby coaches Mr White, Mr Thompson, Mr Cowan and Mr Hamilton. The most successful team is perhaps our very own Under 13s who capped off a remarkable season in the most emphatic fashion, storming through their end-of-season tournament undefeated and without conceding a single try. In girls hockey, we saw continued individual and team success under the leadership of Mrs Murdock, ably supported by Saturday hockey coaches Miss Thompson and Mr Moffett, our after-school coaches Mrs Hunter, Mrs Rankin and Mrs Sneddon, and a number of assistant coaches. Our First X1 Team reached the semi-final of the Stevenson Bowl at the beginning of the season and ended the season contesting the final of the Senior Plate, where unfortunately we lost out narrowly. Whilst disappointed on the day, the girls had an amazing season and were unfortunate not to lift the trophy. Our annual Year 8 tournament saw a total of 18 schools joining us, providing the first opportunity that most schools get to play 11-aside matches at a young age. In boys hockey, Mr Nelson, Mr Young and Mr Donnell led the players through an exceptional season, working alongside our fantastic past pupil coaches. Amongst the highlights of the season were two major victories. The First X1 were crowned McCullough Cup Tier B Champions, defeating Methodist College Belfast in the final in December. Shortly following this success, the First X1 also retained the Burney Plate with a determined victory against Kilkeel High School. The 2nd XI also enjoyed a competitive season and reached the semi-finals of their cup competition, where they were narrowly defeated. James Shields has continued to represent Ulster, at Under 18 and Under 19 level, and won a bronze medal at the UK School Games at the very start of the season, as well as scoring a goal representing the Under 19s in a series of matches against Wales. In netball last year we had 5 teams entered into their respective age groups for Blitz competitions. The teams were also placed into their knock-out Cup Competitions, with notable performances coming from the Intermediate Team in particular which reached the semi-final stage. The Minor Team had an excellent year,

CELEBRATING SUCCESS
When you watch the video, none of this would be possible without the help and support of our staff members, both teaching and non-teaching. What we do, both inside and outside the classroom, creates a culture of encouragement and learning that allows every child in our school a chance to grow. We cannot do that without the support of our parents and I want to thank you personally for the way in which you entrust your children to our care, and work alongside us to support and inspire our young people to be the best we can be. A particular thank you to our Parents Association, Friends of Grosvenor, for their fundraising efforts last year which culminated in a cheque for £14,000 being awarded to the School. We thank the Friends of Grosvenor for their ongoing loyalty and hard work, and we encourage other parents to join them in their ongoing endeavours. My personal thanks go to Miss Rainey for her huge commitment to the Grosvenor community, her professionalism, and her personal support and friendship to me in the years that we have worked together. I thank the Board of Governors for their support and strategic guidance, without which the School would not enjoy such high levels of success. My personal thanks are extended to my Senior Leadership Team for their continued hard work, commitment and good humour: thank you to Dr Rolleston, Mr Brunt and Mr Young (Vice Principals) and Mr Cowan, Mr Thompson, Mrs Rea, Mrs Maguire and Mrs Lander (Senior Leaders). I would like to end on a final comment for our young pupils. Grosvenor Grammar School began with what could be seen as humble beginnings eighty years ago and whilst our pupils are different, even the school name is different and the very building is so far beyond the first school premises, I would argue that the vision that we have has remained the same over those eighty years. If you leave Grosvenor with a love of learning, feeling that you have worked hard and achieved your potential, if you are tolerant of other people and other viewpoints and you have the confidence to make your own way in the world, then this school is a success. It will not happen without our agreement that we have to seize every opportunity we can, and that we have to work together to ensure the best outcomes in every aspect of school life through the relationships we build, the respect that we have for one another, and our acceptance of individual and group responsibility. Enjoy school and know that everyone in our community is welcome and valued. Work hard, be kind, and embrace the help and support of your family, your teachers, the support staff and governors. We all want you to feel inspired and to make a difference in your life, and to the lives of others.
to go from strength to strength last year, winning a gold medal in the Under 13 age group in the Junior Classification Table Tennis Tournament held in Dublin in September. Karsten went on to further individual success at the Ulster Open Tournament, winning once again in the Under 13 category. He followed this up with wins in the North Ayrshire Open in Scotland, the Connacht Open in Sligo, and in Division 8 of the British Youth League. Table tennis attracted a huge number of participants last year under the leadership of Mrs Peel, assisted by Mr Kennedy and Mr McFerran. Football in Grosvenor had another successful season under the leadership of Head Coach Mr Winters and Assistant Coaches Mr Thompson and Mr Tomkins. The Under 18 Team had an excellent season, securing the Under 18 Belfast Grammar Schools’ League for the first time since its inception in 2018 and also reaching the semi-final of the Northern Ireland Plate. Equally, the Under 16 boys performed exceptionally at times to make progress in both the Belfast District and the Northern Ireland Cups. The girls have also achieved considerable success in football last year, with Ellie Tohill and Caitlin Shields representing Northern Ireland Under 15s on several occasions, including the UEFA Development Tournament in October and the Bob Docherty Tournament held in Belfast over Easter. A special mention should go to Reuben Walls who was awarded his Northern Ireland Cap, having represented Northern Ireland in Powerchair football. Badminton continued to surge in popularity as a team and extra-curricular sport, under the leadership of Mr Hunter and assistant coaches Mrs Corken and Mrs Reid. With the growing numbers at the club attending training each week, we were able to add a senior girls’ team to the list of competitive teams. Great progress was made on all fronts, and we look forward to the improvement at competitive level as participation continues to surge. Our pupils excel at many other activities, such as equestrian sport, cross country and running, creative writing, orienteering, darts, golf, sailing, JagTag, ice skating, golf, polocrosse, public speaking, American football, Irish Dancing and Highland Dancing, to name but a few. I apologise that I cannot name everyone in my report, but I trust you will enjoy reading about these events in our School magazine, due to be published shortly. I really hope you have enjoyed today’s video and that it gives you a real sense of what Grosvenor is all about. I want to pay tribute to our pupils for their wonderful participation and achievements, and for the way in which they represent the School so beautifully. Alongside all of their academic, pastoral and extra-curricular events, we also raise money for charity, under the leadership of Miss Stephens and the Charity Committee.
Thank you. Dr F Vasey Principal

School Honours 2024/25 The School Honours System seeks to recognise the achievements and significant commitment of our pupils in their extra-curricular activities. There are four levels of award: Honours Blazer (the highest achievement), Stag, Flash and Badge. All decisions relating to Honours are taken by the Honours Committee, which includes the Head Boy and Head Girl. In deciding on whether a nominee should gain an award or not, the Honours Committee will always consider the overriding principle that the successful nominee is an excellent
representative of the School’s ethos and has competed in a school-based activity, or has been entered by the School. We congratulate all those students who have received Honours through the year and in particular, congratulate those who have reached the pinnacle of success in their chosen field and have been awarded an Honours Blazer.
