Chess Club

The School Chess Club has been making significant strides this year, becoming a hub for strategic minds and enthusiastic players. Every Tuesday afternoon, C207 transforms into a battlefield of wits, where pupils from Years 8 – 14 can gather to challenge each other and hone their skills. Our club isn’t just about competition; it’s a place where friendships are forged over the chessboard. Beginners are always welcome, and our experienced members are more than happy to share tips and strategies. This inclusive environment ensures that everyone, regardless of skill level, can enjoy the game and improve. This year, many of our pupils attended the Ulster Chess Union’s monthly tournaments in Belfast and we were very proud of Sohil Bande (10G) who represented Grosvenor at the London Junior Chess Championships, Belfast Qualifier at Methodist College Belfast. He placed third in the Under 14 category and earned the opportunity to attend the finals in the University of Westminster, London in December 2024. The London Junior Chess Championships is one of the UK’s most prestigious chess events and Sohil’s qualification is especially exciting as this was their centenary year.

But it’s not all about winning. The Chess Club also emphasizes the importance of critical thinking, patience, and perseverance—skills that are invaluable both on and off the board. Whether you’re a seasoned player or just curious about the game, the Chess Club offers a welcoming environment for all. We look forward to next year with our aim of running a few more competitions. Join us and be part of a community where every move counts! Mrs G Sweeney

The Dystopian and Science Fiction Book Club

The Dystopian and Science Fiction Book Club was formed by pupils who were inspired by a novel in the English Department, Lois Lowry’s The Giver . The Club is now in its second year. Readers and writers from Years 8 to Years 11 meet on a Monday afternoon in the English Department, to talk about what they have read, to share their own writing and to recommend books to each other. We have built a library of books from early classic

science fiction to modern fantasy and dystopian literature, and all pupils are welcome to browse and borrow from the collection. Discussion moves from issues that we read about, to world events, politics, the environment, culture, art and everyday life. The club offers a welcoming and enjoyable experience to avid readers, writers and thinkers alike. Mrs K Brett
