Boys Tennis

(L-R): L Barrett, Z Braithwaite, D Neill, C McCappin

The Boys Tennis teams experienced a frustrating season, with little success to be celebrated. Fixtures were difficult to secure due to summer examinations and a number of factors, and interest in trying out for teams was limited, perhaps impacted by the popularity of cricket and athletics amongst our summer sports. Despite this we were able to field two sides, notably at Inter and Junior level, who were able to compete in some fixtures against other schools. We were unable to secure progression to later stages of competitions, often being drawn in groups against schools with Ulster Tennis ranked players. All pupils who represented the school did so with great commitment, and were unfortunate to be drawn against such high level opposition.

Our tennis player of the year was Cole McCappin from the junior side, Cole’s consistency on the baseline and variety of shots were a real asset to the junior team this season. A review process is being undertaken by the Boys PE Department to ascertain how we can improve our results and output in junior tennis over the coming years; my hope is that we are able to identify realistic strategies that will enable us to cultivate interest in future year groups and ensure we enjoy more success in this sporting arena.
