42 DEPARTMENTAL HIGHLIGHTS
This year, Year 11 were lucky to be provided with an informative HLA workshop by Michael from the Careers Service. Pupils were introduced to the concept of a HLA as an alternative pathway to the traditional university route. ‘This talk made me think about looking into Higher level Apprenticeships as I think it is interesting that you have no student debt, and you are able to get a salary.’ Adam Worthington 11S
In October, pupils took part in Mock Interviews. This allowed them to experience how it feels to take part in a professional interview. No-one relishes an interview, and a lot of pupils commented that it was very different to interviews they had for part-time jobs, but the feedback from interviewers was very positive. Many interviewers commented on how our pupils were articulate and confident in their delivery. Well done, to all who took part. A significant number of pupils applied for Higher Level Apprenticeships (HLAs) this year. Higher Level Apprenticeships combine working for a company alongside studying for a degree. They are very competitive and require pupils to have a well developed skillset alongside a strong academic record. We are extremely lucky to have insight provided by our past pupils who have been through the process, to help pupils further develop their understanding of the expectations when applying for a HLA. There are many opportunities for our pupils to gain awareness of HLAs alongside the curriculum. We run a HLA event in Year 13. Pupils get the opportunity to hear from employers, but also from past pupils.
Congratulations to all those pupils who were successful in their HLA applications in Year 14, and we hope you might be the next generation who will return to Grosvenor to share your knowledge with pupils in the future. Work related learning took place in various forms, both in person and virtually, with all Y13 pupils being given a substantial window of time, to arrange a three-day work placement. Opportunities continue to be posted for pupils to avail of throughout the summer holidays. In addition, some pupils had the opportunity to attend a Law Conference and some of our mathematics pupils attended the Isio Actuarial Experience afternoon over Easter. Both events proved to be a huge success, with a number of these pupils being inspired to enter into these professions. The Year 10 and Year 13 Careers Carousel took place in June. We are lucky to have such a generous school community who give their time so freely to help develop our pupil’s awareness of an array of careers. Pupils had the opportunity listen to our speakers in smaller groups, also giving them the opportunity to ask questions.
