SUPPORTING YOUNG PEOPLE IN CARE

I liked Pathways because it wasn’t anything like school. After Pathways I did a course in joinery but I hated it. I thought it would be more practical but it was just lots of written work so I left. I started a few different courses and programmes, but kept leaving them because I didn’t like them. I have a few convictions and have been in trouble with the police a few times, so getting work is much harder because it’s hard to get a job when you have a criminal record. I’ve lived in two children’s homes and 15 different foster placements since I was 14, so I’ve always had a social worker, well different social workers, in my life. My social worker referred me to Give & Take:Core. On Give & Take you can come in and have a laugh with staff and other young people. My attendance is really good; I’m one of the best attenders in here. It’s easier to learn because there is someone there to actually help you. I’ve NAME: GLENN AGE: 20 LIVES: WEST BELFAST INCLUDE YOUTH PROJECT: GIVE & TAKE: CORE "My attendance is really good. I'm one of the best attenders here. Include Youth gives me routine, it helps build my confidence and if I wasn't here I would probably be running about the town" #CAREDAY

I got kicked out of school in forth year and went to Pathways, which is an alternative education provider.

got ICT qualifications, learned how to cook, learned how to apply for jobs, write my CV, tried different sports and I want to do my work placement doing woodwork in the Men’s Shed at Conway Mill. When I move on from Give & Take I want to get into DJing or construction, or else go to college and study art. Give & Take gives me a routine, it helps build my confidence and if I wasn’t on it I would probably just be running about the town. I used to play rugby at school; I was in the school team. I can’t remember what position I played but I was pretty fast. We did a taster with Malone Rugby Club recently, we played tag rugby, got to practice kicks at goal and did general fitness stuff. My favourite team is the All Blacks. I used to play ice hockey for the Junior Belfast Giants, but haven’t played in years because of an injury. I’m still good at ice-skating and we get to go with Give & Take sometimes.
