Ulster Rugby v Edinburgh
Official Digital Matchday Programme of Ulster Rugby v Edinburgh, Friday 16th February 2018, Guinness PRO 14 Competition at Kingspan Stadium.
Welcome back to Kingspan Stadium, the home of Ulster Rugby, where the Ulster squad welcome Edinburgh for Round 15 of the Guinness PRO14. Ulster is coming off the back of a convincing win over the Southern Kings, narrowing the gap on the Scarlets and Leinster who hold the top spots in Conference B. Edinburgh lies just one place behind Ulster and is visiting Kingspan Stadium full of confidence after a win over table toppers Leinster last weekend. We are known for our warm welcome and I am sure that Edinburgh and their passionate traveling supporters will experience this great reception. We also look forward to the next Kingspan Kicking Challenge and wish our competitors the best of luck. Make sure you grab one of our giant red hands and you could be taking up the challenge for a chance to win £1000! Finally, on behalf of Kingspan, I would like to wish the Ulster Rugby squad and management team the very best of luck. To Ulster’s committed fans, enjoy the game, lead the way and help ensure that this is an evening to remember at Kingspan Stadium.

PRESIDENT’S WELCOME
Following last week’s round of games, which saw Ulster’s comprehensive defeat of the Southern Kings and Edinburgh’s impressive win over Leinster, there are just three points separating tonight’s opponents in the Conference B table. We therefore expect a full-blooded confrontation, with major playoff implications potentially resting on the result. Those of us who were in Dublin last weekend witnessed an excellent display from the Irish team to record an emphatic win over Italy, with captain Rory Best scoring a try and Jacob Stockdale bagging a pair. Congratulations to them both, and also to Ulster teammate Iain Henderson, who also played a key role in the victory. The Ireland U20s and Ireland Women also recorded wins over their Italian counterparts last weekend, and we congratulate our Ulster representation on both those teams. In particular, it is worth noting that we have no less than nine Ulster players on the Ireland U20 squad, which is an outstanding achievement. The competition is heating up in the Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ Cup as we are down to the last eight, with the quarter-finals due to be played tomorrow morning, while fixtures in the subsidiary schools’ competitions also continue over the coming weeks. We have a full programme of games in the Ulster Bank All Ireland League this weekend, as well as a host of activity in local men’s, women’s and youth competitions, so please get out and support your local club. Once again, we thank all our sponsors and loyal supporters, and we look forward to another enjoyable rugby experience here at Kingspan Stadium tonight. SUFTUM! Graffin Parke President IRFU (Ulster Branch) As President of the IRFU Ulster Branch, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you all to Kingspan Stadium for tonight’s Guinness PRO14 Round 15 game against Edinburgh. A big welcome to Round 15 of the Championship where we have some really eye- catching fixtures involving the top teams from both Conferences as the fight to reach the Guinness PRO14 Final Series continues to intensify. Scarlets face Leinster in the RDS and it marks a first return to Dublin for the champions since they raised the trophy at Aviva Stadium in May. Wayne Pivac’s men will no doubt be buoyed by the memory of dispatching Leinster in the Irish capital in the Semi-Finals, too, and with both teams level on points at the top of Conference B this promises to be a mouth-watering affair. Both teams are also looking to bounce back after tough losses on the road. Leinster were undone by a very late try in Edinburgh, who have really found their stride under Richard Cockerill. The Scots visit Kingspan Stadium this weekend confident they can close the gap on third-placed Ulster. Benetton Rugby claimed their seventh win of the Guinness PRO14 season against Scarlets in Treviso last weekend, which underlines the unpredictable nature of the Championship. However, Benetton have really strengthened this season and their tally of victories is already their most since 2013. Another three wins from their final seven games would equal their best-ever return (also set in 2013). That record by Benetton was achieved under the guidance of Franco Smith, who I’m delighted to hear will take sole command of the Toyota Cheetahs next season. The men from the Free State have played some electric rugby in their first season and they visit Glasgow Warriors armed with confidence and aiming to stay on track to reach the knock-out stages. Of course, any slip-ups by the Cheetahs and the Cardiff Blues look capable of putting the pressure on and it’s so rewarding to see teams from so many of our competing unions battling it out as the season approaches crunch time ahead of the Guinness PRO14 Final Series. The expansion of the Final Series comes as direct result of the addition of the Cheetahs and the Kings and for the first-time ever, six teams will have the chance to compete for the Guinness PRO14 trophy. Plus there’s the addition of a Play-Off game for the seventh Champions Cup place so there are a lot of tasty fixtures ahead to look forward to. This week, Honda came on board as the Official Car Partner to the Guinness PRO14 Final Series and we’re delighted at this news. Honda have already come up with some great prizes in women’s rugby and mini rugby which should provide some unforgettable memories at our Final in Dublin. Of course, the Guinness PRO14 Final on May 26 is the ultimate celebration of the very best that our Championship has to offer and ticket sales are still going strong. Dublin’s Aviva Stadium provided a fitting setting (and a record attendance) last season and we know it will do so again this year. The Final is no longer an occasion for fans of the Finalists, it’s an incredible occasion for rugby supporters from all over the world and no matter where you’re coming from you can rely on Gullivers Sports Travel to arrange tickets, hotels and flights as our Official Supporter Travel Partner for the Guinness PRO14 Final Series – see www.gulliverstravel.co.uk. We also have a host of ticket options available to cater for every kind of match-day experience so make sure to log on to www.ticketmaster.ie where prices start at €7 for children and €35 for adults. AARON DUNDON REMAINS CONFIDENT IN THE FACE OF A REVIVED EDINBURGH SIDE
With the departure of Les Kiss as Director of Rugby, the coaching ticket had to be reshuffled slightly.
Head coach Jono Gibbes has taken on more responsibility for on-field matters, meaning scrum coach Aaron Dundon has also had to step up and look after more within the forward pack. A former hooker with Leinster, he has plenty of experience from his six-year stint in Dublin before then taking up the role of Forwards Coach with
"Hopefully it’ll be a quick fix but we just have to keep working on it. As coaches, we’re pushing hard and pushing for them to get these basics right." However, that means sorting out what they've been focusing on over the last few weeks, and addressing the team's differing home and away form that has seen them win just one of their last five games on the road. Dundon is confident that they can turn it around and move up the table, and insists they aren't looking behind them in

We spoke about it and decided it didn’t need a lot of change, and we didn’t want to change a whole lot.
the table at tonight's opponents Edinburgh, who are just three points behind after a good run of form. "I think it’s home and away consistency. We haven’t been performing away as we do at home," Dundon states. "Obviously we do enjoy playing at home in front of our supporters, but we have to find that balance and bring that competitiveness and consistency we have at home into our away games. That’s the players preparing as well as they can and making sure they bring that performance. "But we don’t want to look behind us, we want to be looking forward and how to catch the top two. We don’t want to finish third, we want to finish as high as we can, so we’re just looking ahead of us at another win that would bring us closer to the two ahead of us."
"There’s a couple of areas we thought were really critical to us and needed improved, and we’ve been working really hard on them for the last two weeks. It wasn’t about change, it was about what’s important to us and what needs to get better quickly." That begs the question: what did need improved? "Line speed and tackle technique are two things," Dundon continues and somethings in the set piece. We need to show more energy going out and enjoying being out there and showing that energy in every aspect of the game.

Tonight's game will be crucial in the context of the conference, particularly in the battle for the play-off places and that last guaranteed Champions Cup spot for next season. A big 59-10 win over the Southern Kings last week has set Ulster up perfectly for this testing clash, however the Scots are coming in off the back of an equally impressive bonus point win over Leinster. performance last weekend and use home advantage to pick up back-to-back victories to start the final third of the season. "It was a good performance in the end, and to keep performing for the 80 minutes was encouraging," the Kiwi enthuses. "There’s still bits to work on, we still made errors that we’re going to work on to clean up but overall it was a decent performance. "We can’t get too carried away with it because Edinburgh have been going well. They've kept under the radar but they’ve been ticking away and winning games. Richard Cockerill is doing a great job there, he’s got them well drilled and they’re playing a pretty good brand of rugby. "They have a big pack, a dominant pack, which will be a big challenge for us because we don’t have the biggest pack, so we’ll have to try and outsmart them. "The boys love playing at home, so to get them at home in our first game agianst them is good. It should be a good battle." Dundon is hoping that the team can push on from the

SAM SLOAN (7) Sam is from Portadown and attends Derryhale Primary School. He loves both rugby and football. His favourite moment at Kingspan Stadium was watching his brother be a mascot at the Zebre match. Sam wants to be a mascot tonight so that he can meet the players and walk out on to the pitch with them. His favourite player is Tommy Bowe because he has great skill. When older, Sam would like to play professional rugby or football.
ISSAC DUNLOP (9) Issac is from Hillsborough and attends Downshire Primary School. He plays rugby at school and is also a member of Lisburn Mini Rugby Club. Issac also enjoys playing football. When he is older Issac wants to run out onto the pitch in an Ulster jersey as a professional rugby player but for now he is content with being a mascot to the team. Issac’s favourite player is Marcell Coetzee and he hopes that Marcell will return from injury soon.

IT’S DOWN TO BUSINESS FOR ALAN O’CONNOR
O'Connor, who came up the road from Leinster six years ago, graduated from the Abbey Insurance Ulster Academy and wasted little time in imposing his considerable presence in Ulster’s set-piece and in the loose.
He has been a regular face on the Ulster team sheet and has featured in 16 out of 20 games this season, which he says is going really well for him personally. “I’m staying on top of the body and making sure I’m fit to go every week. I have a little routine for myself that I didn’t have a couple of years ago so I’ve really got to know how my body feels and
Friday, running in nine tries against the South African side in a 59-10 success. “It was obviously a good game and we got the result we wanted. It would have been great for them to not score a try but they have some quick players and were really quick on the break. We constructed some really good tries throughout the game, including a couple on the break, so it was a good all round performance from everyone.”
what I need to do to make it feel better so I’m really enjoying this season. The new coaches coming in have brought big new ideas and a freshness about the place
O’Connor led the team as Captain during last week’s stunning victory, but spares little time to reflect on such triumphs as it's back to business tonight as Ulster seek to extend the gap between themselves in 3rd and Edinburgh in 4th to secure a place in the PRO14 play offs. “I was just handed the role of Captain and it was all good. It’s easy to lead the team out
and I’m really enjoying the challenges they throw up to us week in week out both in training and on the pitch at the weekend.” The recent departure of Director of Rugby Les Kiss saw Head Coach Jono Gibbes take the reins but these structural changes had little impact on a man whose steely intent is to get on with life.
and to captain guys who want to put the effort in, guys who come out with the right attitude. Once you’re out there it’s just the same as any other game and like I said when you have guys that are willing to put the effort in and the work rate around the field, it makes every other job easy. It was great.” Edinburgh's five-try win over Leinster means that they remain just three points behind Ulster in Conference B meaning there is everything to play for tonight if Ulster are to secure a final play-off spot. “Edinburgh have looked good this year. They’ve come on well and they’re a really physical side, so I think they’re going to bring that. They’re going to want to turn us over and make boys of us, but, obviously, we’re not going to let that happen on our own pitch. Our mentality is right so we’ll make sure we turn up all guns blazing.”
INTERVIEW: ALAN O'CONNOR “Les is a big character and everyone really liked him. He was around here for two and a half, three years nearly. I owe a lot to Les, he gave me my first start, so it’s been a transition alright, but we still have a job to do so we’re trying to keep our focus and get down to business tonight.
“Working with Jono has been really good. He is straight forward and makes things simple and sort of narrows down to the things that actually matter. He gets us all to focus on them and deliver on them, so I am really enjoying his training sessions. He brings a good mentality for the whole squad, a mentality of wanting to go out and impose yourself on the opposition rather than just participating, so it’s been good.” The Ulstermen certainly imposed themselves on the Southern Kings in spectacular fashion last
16
www. ULSTERRUGBY .com
The need to secure a win for Ulster tonight is apparent but the 25-year old lock appears impervious to this pressure and says that all emphasis for the squad this week has been on targeted preparation. “This is a massive game, it’s a crunch game, so we’ve just been working hard to make sure that we are well prepared. We’ve just been focusing on the things that really matter, all the key quality things and really narrowing in on those aspects in training in our mini units. We’ve been working in our threes and fours before and after sessions, making sure that we keep on top of those small things that make a big difference. With [Richard] Cockerill being their coach, he’s given a real edge to their game so we’re looking forward to the challenge of getting stuck in.” The ease with which the Ulstermen ran in tries against the Kings is unlikely to be replicated tonight against Richard Cockerill's men, but one can always hope. “Hopefully, we can bring the same sort of work rate and attitude around the pitch again. Obviously, you can have all the attitude in the world but if you’re not accurate with the ball and don’t hold onto the ball, it means absolutely nothing. “With the backs and the good set piece that we had last weekend and the same level of attacking play, we’ll be able to get some more tries tonight and hopefully get into the playoffs. If you start looking too far ahead then you’ll trip up on things that matter along the way, so we’re just taking every game as it comes, focusing on the week-to-week, day-to- day, to make sure we’re honed in on what actually matters.”

The game of rugby is built on a foundation of volunteering. Many of our activities and affiliated clubs could not survive without the involvement of passionate and dedicated volunteers, like Rachel Melville, who bring together a range of knowledge, skills and experience to enhance the sport. Here we catch up with Rachel to find out how she got into coaching at Newforge Taggers and the impact volunteering has had on her life. ULSTER RUGBY VOLUNTEER PROFILE: RACHEL MELVILLE
opportunity to learn, but an opportunity to challenge myself to do something outside my comfort zone. What skills or qualities are required for your volunteering role? Communication is key, as some of the children have communication difficulties. It is important to find ways for them to understand what I want, but also for me to understand what they need. Teamwork is also crucial, both with the children and other coaches, so everyone is having fun and it’s not left to one person to organise and take responsibility all the time. Organisational skills and the ability to adapt is also key. Sometimes the session doesn’t quite work out as you expect, so you need to be prepared to change the activity, so it is more suited to the players’ needs and abilities. What do you enjoy most about volunteering? The Taggers are one big happy family. Whenever we go on tour, it provides you with the opportunity to sit down with players, parents and fellow coaches and you get to know them better. Everyone has a great time and we have a lot of tour memories to look back on. Why do you volunteer? I just love it! On Sunday mornings at training, you can see the difficulties the players have to deal with, but they don’t let them get in the way of playing rugby, so you forget your own troubles. Everyone is having fun and you can see how much the players have developed over the years. When some players started with us, they couldn’t throw or catch a rugby ball, but after 10 years I can see huge improvements and can say “I played a small part in that”. We all have smiles on our faces at the end of a session – so everyone wins!
How often do you volunteer? Once a week, on a Sunday morning for training. Also at any tournaments we attend. When did you first begin volunteering with Ulster Rugby?
VOLUNTEER PROFILE I started volunteering with the Taggers in September 2007, after a conversation with a family friend, who is Head Coach at the Taggers. We were chatting about sport in general, and as I enjoy most sports, when he asked me if I’d ever thought about volunteering, I went along to the Taggers the next Sunday and i've never left! In 2012, I helped out with the Ulster Rugby Summer Camps and the Family Fun Day. I was then approached to help with match nights, which I did for around three years. Have you had a previous volunteering role elsewhere? No, this is my first experience of volunteering on a regular basis. What does your volunteering involve?
I help to set up and run training sessions on a Sunday morning. As coaches we decide what areas to focus on during the session and share coaching responsibilities equally. We have a group of 12-15 coaches, with at least 45 players attending. They are aged from 6 years up to young adults, all with additional needs. I was also recently appointed as a committee member of the Taggers so I attend meetings when required. What inspired you to get involved? I’ve always been a rugby fan, but I didn’t know how to get involved as girls rugby wasn’t as popular or well-known as it is now. Volunteering with the Taggers would be something different, as I’d never worked with children who have additional needs. I saw it, not only as an
20
www. ULSTERRUGBY .com
What advice would you give someone who wants to start volunteering? It’s so much fun and you get lots of enjoyment out of it. However, always be aware of other responsibilities – time management and communication is key if you can’t make your role. Volunteering has opened doors for me, both in rugby and outside of the sport. It’s given me the confidence to realise there are no barriers to what you can achieve. If you put your mind to it and work hard, you will be able to do it. Do you have to come from a Rugby background or need Rugby knowledge to volunteer with a rugby club? No, I am a rugby fan, but didn’t know the specifics of Tag rugby and how it would need to be adapted to suit the abilities and needs of those who attend our sessions. I have learnt this as I have gone along and through attending training courses. Plus, as coaches we all share best practice, as there is some trial and error to see what works. What has been the highlight of your volunteering? Seeing those children who started with very little ability and watching them grow over the years. They now have the confidence to direct others on the pitch and help the younger players improve their skills. Ulster Rugby is always keen to hear from enthusiastic volunteers who are willing to give up their time to enhance the sport. If you would like to learn more about the various volunteering opportunities available near you, please email volunteer@ulsterrugby.com.

CARE DAY 2018 Ulster Rugby’s official charity partner, Include Youth, supports children and young people throughout Northern Ireland, who are in or leaving care or from disadvantage communities, to improve their employablilty, increase their confidence and self-esteem and reach their full potential. Here, in honour of Care Day 2018, a selection of young people share their stories and the impact Include Youth has had on their lives.
ZOE, 20 “I entered the care system at the age of 16 and things started to really go downhill from there. I did try and go to Tech but that only lasted a month. I didn’t get any support and turned to drugs. Include Youth has helped get me into a routine, building up my confidence and helping me think about my future. I am hoping to move on in September to do my Level 2 in Health and Social Care at Tech as I now feel ready and will have support from Include Youth.” MEGAN, 19 “Before Include Youth I didn’t see me making it to next year. The support and structure has given me focus to think beyond where I was stuck and helped me uncover the potential I hadn’t time to think about. Now, I have a structure to my day, I am independent and looking after myself, and have a firm plan in place for the future to study Veterinary Nursing full time once I have finished my Access Course.”
INCLUDE YOUTH
DARYL H, 18 “The future’s looking bright now. I feel that being in Include Youth is helping me to build my self-confidence. I’m now getting support and encouragement to keep on track. I’m looking forward to achieving qualifications in Essential Skills and getting work experience in jobs that interest me.”
DARRYL C, 20 “I don’t want to sit about and do nothing anymore, I want to develop myself. Include Youth has really helped my confidence and belief in attending interviews. I feel my confidence growing every interview and I know what to expect and how to behave. I hope it pays off one day and I secure a job soon as I really want to work. If anyone out there wants to employ me, get in touch!”

PETER,18 “I am a massive rugby fan and getting the chance to visit Kingspan Stadium with Include Youth was class. I spoke with a few of the players and it really motivated me to hear them talk about how things can be achieved through hard work and self-belief. Thanks to Include Youth I have recently got a full-time job and for the first time in a long time, I am looking forward to the future.”
INCLUDE YOUTH
KOURTNIE, 20 “Before I started Include Youth, my life was going downhill. I wasn’t really confident or bubbly or talkative, I would just have sat by myself, but I’m now really confident and I interact more with everyone. I have a true group of friends that I can be myself around. If I didn’t have Include Youth I’d probably still be at rock bottom.”
DAVID, 21 “Before Include Youth I went to college, but I really struggled with the size of the classes and didn’t get on with the tutors. At Include Youth I get one-to-one support from the youth workers and tutors and I am actually enjoying studying for my qualifications. I would love to become a firefighter one day.”
KATIE, 17 “Before I started Include Youth I struggled with anxiety. Every day was hard for me and just doing normal stuff was a struggle. I had no confidence and only socialised with two friends I’ve had since primary school. I’ve been with IY for seven months and my confidence has really improved, I have more friends and having a routine has really helped with my anxiety. Include Youth has been the best thing for me.” DAIRINE “I started with the Give and Take programme on a 1:1, they helped to increase my confidence and self-belief. I am now involved in the group programme and currently completing my OCN Level 2 award in Youth Leadership. I am also completing a work placement in a respite unit for young people with learning disabilities and involved in a youth project as a volunteer. I am more hopeful for the future and planning to gain more qualifications which will help me get a job working with young people.”

10 THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT EDINBURGH RUGBY
8 9
1
Following serious financial problems in private ownership, Edinburgh Rugby was brought under the control of the Scottish Rugby Union in 2007. Richard Cockerill’s appointment as Head Coach, after years of success with Leicester, has seen the club have its best PRO14 campaign to date.
An Edinburgh District team played its first game against Glasgow in 1872, winning 3-0.

10 THINGS TO KNOW
After periods as The Reivers and Gunners, Edinburgh Rugby was formed in 1996 to meet the challenge of the professional era.
In 2015, the club became the first Scottish side to contest a major European final, losing out to Gloucester by 19-13.
10
Scotland winger Tim Visser is Edinburgh’s record try-scorer with 60 touchdowns.
Edinburgh’s top scorer is Chris Paterson, the celebrated Scottish international, with 793 points.
Michael Bradley, formerly of Connacht, and Ulster’s former Head Coach Alan Solomons, are credited with rebuilding the club between 2011 and 2016. Murrayfield, the international stadium, had long been the club’s home – but the move to the smaller Myreside ground has coincided with a period of sustained success.
7
The best finish the club has achieved since the formation of the domestic league competition, now the PRO14, is 9th place.
