Welcome To St John Ambulance (Northern Ireland) The Nation’s Leading First Aid Training Provider
“Everyone who needs it should receive first aid from those around them. No-one should suffer from the lack of trained first-aiders.”
We train more employees in workplaces than any other provider. Plus, all surplus profits fund our first aid charity. Training that helps you comply with workplace legislation It’s important to regularly assess all your workplace first aid, fire safety and health and safety needs and make sure employees are appropriately trained. Your responsibility The regulations give you the freedom and flexibility to choose the training that’s right for your business needs. However, this comes with the responsibility of ensuring that you assess your workplace, workforce and work processes to identify all the risks. You must then make sure that training is in place to cover the needs you identified and meet the required regulatory standards set by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), and that certificates are valid and in date. Meeting the right standards St John Ambulance has been setting the highest training standards for decades. As co-authors of the UK’s only fully authorised First Aid Manual, we continue to bring our frontline experience and clinical expertise to the classroom with the latest first aid protocols: making sure your first aiders leave our courses knowing exactly what to do whenever first aid is needed.

Training on your premises We know that for all sorts of practical or commercial reasons it’s not always possible to take people off site for training, however important. In which case there’s a simple solution: we will come to you. If you have a group of 10 to 12 people and a room large enough for them to take part in practical exercises,we can arrange training on your premises at a time that suits you. And if space is a problem we’ll meet you at an alternative venue of your choice. Our priority is to make sure you get the training you need and we are flexible regarding numbers, days and times. Where we will never compromise is in the quality of our training. Please contact a member of the training team on 028 9079 9393 or email training@sjanifirstaid.org to discuss your specific requirements. Your support makes a difference Training with St John Ambulance (NI) will make a difference, not a profit. The surplus from our commercial training courses is regenerated straight back into our first aid services, equipmentand other community programmes. So the benefits of training with us extend beyond your own organisation. You will be helping to make lots of other workplaces, public spaces and events safer too – and supporting our vital work with young people and some of the most vulnerable members of society.

Workplace First Aid Two St John Ambulance (NI) qualifications comply with the requirements of the Health and Safety Regulations:
First Aid at Work A comprehensive three-day course suitable for all workplaces. Emergency First Aid at Work A one day course suitable for smaller, lower- risk workplaces, where a risk assessment has indicated that a lower level of first aid cover is sufficient.
Every workplace is different so it’s vital to ensure that the training your first aiders receive is appropriate to your needs. Use the table below as a quick guide to assess what training courses may be appropriate.
Step 3: Recommended minimum First aid requirements At least one person trained in Emergency First Aid at Work At least one person trained in Emergency First Aid at Work At least one person trained in First Aid at Work for every 100 employed on-site (or part thereof) At least one person trained in Emergency First Aid at Work or First Aid at Work (depending on the specific hazards) At least one person trained in First Aid at Work for every 50 employed on-site (or part thereof) At least one person trained in Emergency First Aid at Work
Step 1: Degree of hazard Low hazard (e.g. offices, shops, libraries)
Step 2: Number of employees
Step 4: Previous injury and illness records What’s the risk of injury or ill health? Can this minimum cover deal with injuries and health issues that might occur?
Step 5: Specific risk factors
<25
• Disabled employees • Existing health issues • First aider leave and absences • First aiders’ skills fade without practice • Inexperienced employees • Lone/home workers • Multiple floors or buildings • Multiple shifts • Professional drivers • Proximity of emergency medical services • Public access • Remote workers • Working with children or infants
25-50
>50
Higher hazard (e.g. light engineering and assembly work, food processing, warehousing, extensive work with dangerous machinery or sharp instruments, construction, work involving harmful chemicals)
<5
5-50
>50
To properly safeguard your employees, you should have at least one qualified first aider available at all times. Without this provision, your employees are at risk.
Potential First Aiders should: • Possess an aptitude to absorb new knowledge and skills • Be able to cope with stressful and physically demanding emergency procedures • Have duties that do not prevent them from going immediately to an emergency

Annual Refresher A person’s competence will decline over time if skills they have been taught are not used regularly. In light of this the HSE strongly recommends that first aiders attend a refresher session once every year during the three year period. This three-hour course provides first aiders with an opportunity to practice and update their skills at any time while their first aid certificate is valid. It does not extend the period the original certificate is valid for but it helps to combat first aid skills fade. Course duration 3 hours The first Annual Refresher training is FREE to those who gained the First Aid at Work qualification through St John Ambulance (NI) and HALF PRICE to those who gained the Emergency First Aid at Work qualification through St John Ambulance (NI). Commercial Terms & Conditions Bookings Bookings may be made online, by email, fax, letter, telephone. All new customers will be required to complete and return a Course Booking Form within five working days to confirm the
Candidates on First Aid at Work requalification courses must hold a First Aid at Work certificate. Evidence of such certification will be required before a candidate can be accepted onto a course. Candidates who commence a First Aid at Work course but are unable to complete it must make arrangements to do so within 13 weeks of the original commencement date (six weeks in the case of a First Aid at Work requalification course), subject to the above condition applying. It is the responsibility of the customer to ensure that these arrangements are made. Candidates wishing to transfer to another course, after their course has commenced, may do so if places are available and subject to a transfer fee of £50 + VAT. The same 13 week and six week completion conditions still apply. Selecting a First Aider It is the employer’s responsibility to select a suitable person to train as a First Aider. In doing so employers should have regard to an individual’s: • reliability, disposition and communication skills; • aptitude and ability to absorb new knowledge and learn new skills; • ability to cope with stressful and physically demanding emergency procedures; and • normal duties (these should be such as would allow the first aider to go immediately and quickly to the scene of an emergency). Companies whose nominee has special needs, for example dyslexia, partial sight/hearing, are asked to inform the bookings co-ordinator so that arrangements can be made for him/her prior to the course commencing. If required, an interpreter may accompany a candidate on a course. This will be at the customers’ expense. Courses On a Company’s Own Premises For courses on a company’s own premises we require a large room (not less than 24ft x 24ft) with plenty of floor space free from furniture, a flip chart or white board. Training should be free from interruption for the full day. Toilets and refreshment facilities should be available. On the afternoon of the final day of both First Aid at Work and FAW requalification courses, two additional smaller rooms will be required plus a waiting area. All persons booking on St John Ambulance (NI) courses are presumed to accept these conditions. For enquiries please call 028 9079 9393, Fax: 028 9079 3303 or Email: training@sjanifirstaid.org
booking. This will form a contract with yourself (the ‘customer’) and St John Ambulance (NI). Invoice will be issued when the booking is confirmed. Joining instructions and location map will be sent 3 weeks prior to the course commencing. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure that the candidate receives this information and is fully briefed. Payment Full payment needs to be made 30 days from the date of invoice or prior to the course start date, whichever is sooner, unless alternative arrangements have been agreed in writing. Payment is accepted in cash, cheque or credit/debit card. Cancellation Fees Candidate substitutions may be made up to two weeks before the commencement of a course at no extra charge. A late transfer or cancellation charge of £50 + VAT per candidate will be payable if notification is received less than two weeks prior to the course commencing. If a candidate fails to arrive on day one of a course, without prior notification, St John Ambulance reserves the right to charge the full fee for that course. Candidates who begin a course but do not complete it will be charged the full fee. This applies to all courses. Companies, who cancel or postpone an ‘in-house’ course with fewer than 3 weeks’ notice, will be charged an administration fee of £150 + VAT. This applies to courses arranged to take place on either the customer’s own premises or on St. John Ambulance (NI) premises. First Aid at Work, First Aid at Work requalification and Emergency First Aid at Work courses Health & Safety Regulations require candidates on the above courses to receive a minimum number of tuition hours; therefore 100% attendance and punctuality are necessary. Late arrivals will not be admitted to the course and the full course fee will be charged. First Aid at Work and First Aid at Work Requalification courses consist of written assessment and continuous observation by the trainer. Candidates who fail to reach the required standard will be unable to act as first aiders in the workplace.
