At UEFA’s Ordinary Congress back in March 2014 the association’s 54 member associations (Kosovo was not a member at this time) voted unanimously in favour of the creation of a new international tournament to take place in the ‘empty’ seasons without the UEFA European Championships or the FIFA World Cup.

The first UEFA Nations League will take place during the 2018-19 campaign, effectively replacing most international friendlies involving European nations.
