Northern Ireland v Bosnia

BRUNT THE PLAYER CAN’T WAIT TO BE BRUNT OF THE GAWA Chris Brunt is looking forward to dusting off his green and white scarf after hanging up his international boots.

“No matter how many of them are at games, home and away, it always feels like a home game to us,” he pointed out. “When the team were going well it was easily the best atmosphere I’ve ever played in but during the tough times I can’t describe how much the support and encouragement meant to us all. “We were very aware we had to give something back and that’s what has made the past four years or so the best of my career.” Missing out on Euro 2016 and the World Cup 2018 play-off defeat to Switzerland were, not surprisingly, low points in his international career. However, he pointed out: “Not going to the Euros as a player was a difficult time for me but being around the fans and enjoying the games from their perspective was something I’m really glad I did. “The number of messages of support and good wishes I’ve received since making my decision (to retire) has been truly overwhelming and I’ll be forever grateful.”

The West Bromwich Albion skipper called time on his Northern Ireland career last month after earning 65 caps but can’t wait to enjoy international games as a fan. Having suffered the agony of missing out on Euro 2016 due to a serious knee injury, the ex-Sheffield Wednesday ace made the trip to France and, even though he had media commitments, he made sure he spent time enjoying the buzz with and being part of the Green and White Army. “I would like to thank the Northern Ireland fans, who have provided atmospheres I will remember for the rest of my life,” said Brunt.  “It was always a pleasure to play in front of you. I look forward to returning to Windsor Park as soon as possible but this time on your side of the white line.” The 33-year-old midfielder insists the atmosphere Northern Ireland fans create is something truly special.
