A hundred years ago, as war raged across Europe,
thousands of men from all parts of this island
and from different backgrounds saw action in the
British armed services.
Among those who witnessed the horrors of
the Somme and Gallipoli were distinguished
sportsmen who were well known footballers,
cricketers, hockey players, GAA stars, rugby players
and athletes.

Barney Donaghey who played for a string of clubs
including Manchester United, Burnley, Hibernian,
Belfast Celtic and Glentoran.
Donaghey could play at either inside right or inside
left and was a natural goalscorer with a quick
temper.
He was a crowd favourite and, aged 19, made
his international debut for Ireland in 1902
against Scotland in a game played at Balmoral in
Belfast. Scotland won 3-0 and the game marked
Donaghey’s sole appearance in an Irish shirt but it
did not stop him having a lengthy career that took
in clubs in Ireland, England and Scotland.
He had three spells with Derry Celtic in his native
city and for many seasons was regarded as one
of the Irish League’s best players. When war broke
out he volunteered for military service and as a
member of the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers was killed

Like Donaghey, Harold Sloan was another gifted
Irish international footballer who lost his life in the
Great War.
A Dubliner, Sloan played for Bohemians and made
