SEAVIEW STADIUM, BELFAST OFFICIAL MATCH DAY PROGRAMME | 29/11/2021

PRESIDENT’S WELCOME

MANAGER’S VIEW

Welcome everyone to tonight’s FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 qualifier against North Macedonia. The visitors come to Seaview for a back-to-back fixture with Kenny Shiels’ team, who ran out convincing winners in Skopje four days ago. Northern Ireland are currently ranked 48th in the world compared to the Macedonians who sit at 131 in the FIFA Coca-Cola Women’s World Ranking. It is never nice to see anyone lose by a large margin - the visitors are on a journey to develop further - but there can be no room for sentiment . Shiels will be taking nothing for granted as he prepares his team with his customary thoroughness. It was rewarding to see Simone Magill contribute four goals in Skopje after injury and family matters kept her out of some important games previously. Simone, of course, holds the record for the fastest goal by any male or female Northern Ireland international player with a goal after 11 seconds against Georgia in 2016. Her 20 goals now matches Kyle Lafferty’s tally. It was equally pleasing that the hat-trick from Rachel Furness brought her total for Northern Ireland to 36, equalling David Healy’s goalscoring exploits. It is also astonishing that out of 167 official senior women’s international games Julie Nelson has played in 121 of them. This really is a team of role models! The girls in green and white began their quest for a place at the Women’s World Cup 2023 – it is being hosted by Australia and New Zealand – with a 4-0 win over Luxembourg in Larne followed by a 4-0 victory over Latvia in Belfast back in September. Last month they were defeated 4-0 by the group’s top seeds, England, at Wembley and then drew 2-2 with second seeds Austria at home. I thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere and the family feel at the Austria game, so I am really looking forward to tonight’s match. Whether you are a Berlin Swiftette or one of the Mid Ulster Ladies (to name but two sets of enthusiastic supporters) , I hope that you are in fine voice this evening. The ‘sold out’ sign for approximately 2,300 tickets went up less than two weeks after they went on sale for this qualifier at Seaview – it should be a noisy night! The success in Skopje saw Northern Ireland remain in third place in European Qualifying Group D on 10 points. Prior to this programme going to print , the Austrians (also on 10 points but with a better goal difference) were due to play their game in hand against table toppers England at the Stadium of Light in Sunderland on Saturday night . Here’s hoping the outcome of that encounter worked in our favour. Enjoy the game tonight! CONRAD KIRKWOOD PRESIDENT IRISH FOOTBALL ASSOCIAT ION

We are delighted to welcome North Macedonia to Seaview for this FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 qualifier. The game is being played in front of a full house, which is great for the players. I thank each and every one of you for your incredible support. I was pleased when I heard tickets for this qualifier sold out quickly. That’s another indication of how well the team are doing right now and the growing interest in the women’s game in Northern Ireland. Naturally, I was delighted with our performance in the first game of this double header with North Macedonia. The girls played some excellent football in Skopje on Thursday as they registered a record-breaking win. But we must segregate the two games because it’s going to be incredibly difficult to put in another performance like that, and to match such determination, quality and endeavour tonight. Having said that, the girls are well prepared for this second encounter with North Macedonia. We have looked at the psychology of the game and the technical side of the game, and we have also prepared for every eventuality. It’s going to be tough for our players because we have never been in this position before where we have come off the back of such a huge victory and now we are having to consolidate that. It will be hard but we will endeavour to do that. I thought everyone performed well in Skopje. I was particularly impressed with Simone Magill. If you take her goals out of the equation, her all-round performance was magnificent. She made a key contribution to the outcome, and she’s a fantastic footballer with lots of good traits. I felt Rachel Furness drove us on and we defended the counter attack remarkably well. And big congratulations to Furney on equalling David Healy’s goals record for Northern Ireland thanks to her hat-trick on Thursday. Hopefully she can add to the 36 tonight. In the game in Skopje I also thought Demi Vance and Rebecca Holloway formed a good relationship down the left flank, while Rebecca McKenna and Lauren Wade were good on the other side. Lauren was always alert and dangerous. We have got some great combinations there that we can work on. My players show tremendous commitment and desire every time they pull on that green jersey and I am certain they will be up for it again in Belfast. Thanks as ever for your support. It means so much to the players, myself and the backroom staff. Hopefully we will be able to give you all - as well those watching the match at home - something to cheer about. We have had an incredible year in 2021, qualifying for the UEFA Women’s Euros and starting our World Cup qualification campaign strongly, and it would be great to end the year with another victory under our belts.

Bring on 2022! KENNY SHIELS NORTHERN IRELAND WOMEN MANAGER

The game is changing. Every step of the way. We’re proud to power women’s football here in Northern Ireland.

NORTHERN IRELAND WOMEN DEFEAT NORTH MACEDONIA 11-0 Words: Nigel Tilson

Northern Ireland’s senior women’s team were relentless in the first instalment of their World Cup qualifiers double header against North Macedonia. Kenny Shiels’ side were simply superb as they claimed another three points in European Qualifying Group D with an 11-0 victory in Skopje on Thursday. Four goals from Simone Magill , a hat-trick from Rachel Furness and goals from Rebecca McKenna, Lauren Wade, Kirsty McGuinness and Rebecca Holloway secured the sensational win. It was the Northern Ireland senior women’s team’s biggest ever victory home or away – and Furness’s hat-trick meant she equalled David Healy’s goalscoring record for Northern Ireland. The midfielder now has 36 goals for her country. Shiels’ team completely dominated the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 qualifier at the Football Federation of North Macedonia Training Centre. Northern Ireland opened the scoring after four minutes. Demi Vance’s pinpoint delivery to the back post found Furness and she tucked the ball home. On 10 minutes Wade broke down the right and fed the ball back to McKenna who blasted it into the top corner. It was her first goal for Northern Ireland and it was a lovely finish to put her team two up. The third goal followed a minute later. This time Furness fed Magill inside the area and she slammed the ball into the bottom corner. In the 16th minute Furness was hauled down inside the area by North Macedonia midfielder Elma Shemsovikj and she brushed herself down to slot the resulting penalty past keeper Magdalena Lekovska to make it 4-0. Skipper Marissa Callaghan fired an effort against the bar before Northern Ireland were awarded another penalty when Viktorija Nedeva fouled McGuinness inside the area on 23 minutes. This time, however, Lekovska was equal to a tame effort from Furness. Northern Ireland’s fifth came soon after when a Holloway cross eventually found its way to Wade who curled a beautiful effort into the top corner from 16 yards. That goal came in the 26th minute and goal number six followed seven minutes later. Holloway slipped in McGuinness down the left and from an angle she slotted the ball into the bottom corner. Magill grabbed her second of the game on 42 minutes. Holloway was once again the provider. She slipped past a couple of markers and crossed for the striker to cleverly tap the ball home from close range. Rachel McLaren made her senior debut after replacing Crusaders Strikers team-mate Julie Nelson at half-time. Early in the second half Wade let fly from the edge of the area and was unlucky to see her effort cannon off the bar, and a

minute later Furness saw her long range effort tipped on to the bar by Lekovska. Furness completed her hat-trick in the 68th minute, rifling the ball home from 10 yards. Magill got her hat-trick moments later, however, when a defender’s kick-out was intercepted by the striker and she swept the ball past the keeper. She made it 10-0 as full-time approached. Northern Ireland keeper Jackie Burns punted the ball forward and it evaded the home defence, however Magill nipped in behind them and cleverly lobbed the keeper. Holloway got the goal that her overall performance deserved when she netted number 11 in added time. Substitute Nadene Caldwell’s strike was palmed down by the keeper into Holloway’s path and she tucked the ball in from eight yards to complete the memorable rout . It was also her first goal for Northern Ireland. SENIOR WOMEN’S TEAM DRAW WITH AUSTRIA Northern Ireland’s senior women’s team produced a superb performance to draw 2-2 with Austria Women in a FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 qualifier in Belfast last month. And it could have been even better. Kenny Shiels’ side were leading 2-1 after 90 minutes but the Austrians, second seeds in European Qualifying Group D behind England, scored deep into added time to secure a point .

Burns kept out a Marie Therese Hobinger drive before producing a superb double save on 81 minutes. Firstly she saved at Dunst’s feet 12 yards out and then she pushed away Zadrazil’s follow-up shot . Jessica Foy, who along with Emma McMaster was a late addition to the squad following the four withdrawals, came on with five minutes of regulation time remaining to shore things up. Austria continued to push forward. Puntigam blasted in a long range effort which was tipped over by Burns before Nicole Billa smashed a shot against the bar. It was all hands on deck at this stage as Austria turned the screw, and Northern Ireland could not hold out . Two minutes into added time Carina Wenninger launched the ball into the area and substitute Enzinger was on hand to head the ball over Burns into the net . It was a real sucker punch. Northern Ireland: Jackie Burns, Rebecca McKenna, Demi Vance, Sarah McFadden, Julie Nelson, Kelsie Burrows, Marissa Callaghan (captain) , Rachel Furness, Kirsty McGuinness, Kerry Beattie, Lauren Wade. Substitutes: (used) Simone Magill , Jessica Foy, Emily Wilson; (unused) Becky Flaherty (GK) , Maddison Harvey-Clifford, Rachel McLaren, Emma McMaster, Louise McDaniel , Joely Andrews, Ciara Watling. Austria: Manuela Zinsberger, Laura Wienroither, Virginia Kirchberger, Carina Wenninger (captain) , Verena Hanshaw, Sarah Puntigam, Katharina Naschenweng, Sarah Zadrazil , Nicole Billa, Marie Therese Hobinger, Barbara Dunst . Substitutes: Vanessa Gritzner (GK) , Jasmin Pal (GK) , Celina Degen, Viktoria Pinther, Maria Plattner, Katharina Schiechtl , Laura Feiersinger, Marina Georgieva, Jasmin Eder, Katja Wienerroither, Annabel Schasching, Stefanie Enzinger. Words: Nigel Tilson

Northern Ireland, who had Chloe McCarron, Caragh Hamilton, Nadene Caldwell and Laura Rafferty pulled from the squad hours before kick-off due to Covid protocols, put in an unbelievable shift in front of 2,350 spectators at Seaview. Austria were the better team in the first half and went in 1-0 up at the break through a Barbara Dunst strike. However, the home side were full of energ y in the second period and deservedly went ahead thanks to cracking goals from Lauren Wade and Demi Vance. But the visitors piled on the pressure towards the end and grabbed the leveller through substitute Stefanie Enzinger. During the early exchanges Northern Ireland keeper Jackie Burns saved well from Sarah Puntigam and Katharina Naschenweng. On the half-hour mark Burns turned a Barbara Dunst free- kick around the post , however Austria took the lead on 42 minutes when Dunst got on the end of a clever pass from Sarah Zadrazil and stroked the ball home. Just 47 seconds after the restart Wade scored a peach of an equaliser. Rachel Furness launched a long pass over the top and Wade ran on to it before neatly stroking it past Manuela Zinsberger into the bottom corner. And Northern Ireland’s second goal was even better. In the 50th minute Demi Vance stepped up to take a free-kick from 35 yards and placed it superbly into the top corner.
