FIFA WOMEN’S WORLD CUP 2023 QUALIFIER NORTHERN IRELAND V AUSTRIA

SEAVIEW STADIUM, BELFAST OFFICIAL MATCH DAY PROGRAMME | 26/10/2021

PRESIDENT’S WELCOME

MANAGER’S VIEW

Welcome everyone to tonight’s FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 qualifier against Austria who come to Seaview on the back of a 5-0 win over Luxembourg in Wiener Neustadt. Kenny Shiels and his team can be immensely proud of their performance at Wembley at the weekend against the high-ranking Lionesses. Sometimes you win, sometimes you learn. The team will have learnt a lot but , as Kenny observed after the match, the fitness of England and the quality of their bench made the biggest difference. It was great to see Julie Nelson equalling Pat Jennings’ record of 119 caps and Kelsie Burrows making her first competitive start . For me Jackie Burns was magnificent in the Northern Ireland goal and, supported by a resolute defence, she played a big part in keeping England at bay for 64 minutes. Northern Ireland’s travelling support can always be relied upon to spur the team on. Saturday was no exception with 450 supporters being in fine and distinctive voice alongside circa 23,000 England fans. Even at 4-0 down, they still sung their hearts out and showed the England fans how it should be done. For that Kenny’s team will have been truly grateful and they showed it with their appreciation at the end of the game. It made it a great experience at the home of football . Tonight’s game sees the team rise to the challenge posed by a highly rated Austrian side. Whilst England have scored 22 goals without reply in European Qualifying Group D, Austria are hot on their heels after scoring 19 and only conceding one in three matches to date. Seaview is sold out for this qualifier, showing just how much the Northern Ireland senior women’s team have captured the imagination. Kenny Shiels will be keen to pit his technical nous, and that of his team, against the Austrians. Perhaps he will have planned something on the training ground which will bear fruit this evening. Whatever the case, the Green and White Army will spur the team on in typical fashion. Our fans will always find something to sing about but here’s hoping it’s a memorable night! CONRAD KIRKWOOD PRESIDENT IRISH FOOTBALL ASSOCIAT ION

We are delighted to welcome Austria to Seaview for this FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 qualifier. We know it’s going to be another incredibly tough game for us, especially following our exertions against England at the weekend. Austria, like England, have a 100% record so far in European Qualifying Group D and will no doubt want to keep it that way. Their latest success was a 5-0 victory home to Luxembourg on Friday night. However, as we showed at Wembley, we have a tremendous spirit and I believe we can upset our more illustrious opponents. We were underdogs going in to Saturday’s match and we will be underdogs again this evening. The Austria squad is mainly made up of players who operate in either the German or Austrian Bundesligas, which are both strong leagues. And their players are all full-time professionals. So we know it is going to be really tough, however if we get our gameplan right then I am confident we can get our World Cup qualification campaign back on track. We did incredibly well to keep England out for more than an hour on Saturday. Tactically we matched them. Taking one example, our plan was to keep prolific England striker Ellen White quiet and I thought Sarah McFadden and Julie Nelson were superb in doing that. I also feel we had them worried in the opening part of the second half when we were seeing more of the ball. That, of course, prompted them to make changes and ultimately their substitutes did the damage as our legs started to go. I believe their superior fitness told in the end. Of course, England thoroughly deserved their victory and the final score reflected how the game panned out. They should have scored a couple in the first half, while Jackie Burns pulled off a string of fine saves. Let’s not forget that Sarina Wiegman had several world class players to call upon, while we have many players who have to book time off work to play for their country. That’s not an excuse, it’s just reality. However, I believe in my players and I know they believe in themselves. They work their socks off for each other, showing great courage, commitment and desire every time they pull on that green jersey. I feel we will learn a lot from the Wembley experience, especially when it comes to coping with playing at big stadiums and in front of a big crowd. While I was proud of how the players defended, I was disappointed with some technical aspects of our game. I felt our ball retention was poor at times and I thought we could have used the ball better. We will be doing everything we can to put that right against Austria – in front of a full house at Seaview. A huge thank-you for your support. It means so much to the players, myself and the backroom staff. Hopefully we will be able to give you all - as well those watching the match at home online - something to cheer about. NORTHERN IRELAND WOMEN LOSE OUT TO ENGLAND IN WORLD CUP QUALIFIER Northern Ireland’s senior women’s team battled bravely against England in a FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 qualifier at Wembley on Saturday.

Words: Nigel Tilson

At the start of the second half Hemp fired a shot wide before Lauren Wade made an excellent run down the left wing and fired a low cross into the box which was touched by Greenwood – and that was enough to put off the onrushing Caragh Hamilton. She was inches from making contact with the ball . McFadden was immense alongside Nelson, Rebecca McKenna, Burrows and Demi Vance in the back line. And Burns was outstanding between the sticks. Just after the hour mark Burns made a fantastic save with her feet from a low Hemp strike but moments later England took the lead. Beth Mead, who had just come on as a substitute, produced a lovely finish on 64 minutes with a perfectly executed overhead kick as the ball bobbled around the box. Hemp produced a lovely chip over the keeper which was turned in by substitute England on the line to make it 2-0. Mead got her second three minutes later – in the 75th minute - with an emphatic finish at the back post and she completed her hat-trick when she ran on to a Burns clearance and hammered the ball home. Northern Ireland: Jackie Burns, Rebecca McKenna, Demi Vance, Sarah McFadden, Julie Nelson, Marissa Callaghan (captain) , Chloe McCarron, Caragh Hamilton, Kelsie Burrows, Rachel Furness, Lauren Wade. Substitutes: (used) Kirsty McGuinness, Ciara Watling, Louise McDaniel , Kerry Beattie, Emily Wilson; (unused) Becky Flaherty (GK) , Maddy Harvey-Clifford (GK) , Rachel McLaren, Nadene Caldwell , Laura Rafferty, Joely Andrews.

They kept the top seeds in European Qualifying Group D at bay for more than an hour but a hat-trick from substitute Beth Mead and a goal from another substitute, Bethany England, gave the hosts a deserved 4-0 win. Northern Ireland showed plenty of courage throughout , however England’s superior fitness told in the end. Just over 23,000 fans, including a 450-strong contingent of the Green and White Army, watched England secure the victory. Kelsie Burrows, making her first competitive start for Northern Ireland, made a good interception early on to settle the nerves, while Julie Nelson, equalling Pat Jennings’ record of 119 caps for Northern Ireland, and Sarah McFadden stood firm at the heart of the defence. On 14 minutes Kenny Shiels’ side had a let-off when Lauren Hemp darted into the box and unleashed a powerful shot which crashed off the underside of the bar. Ellen White, England captain Leah Williamson and Ella Toone all had efforts on goal before Burrows snuffed out a Rachel Daly raid. Moments later Burns produced a great double save, firstly to keep out a header from Williamson and then to palm the ball away as White was set to pounce. On 30 minutes Alex Greenwood let fly from distance and her shot came crashing back off the bar.

The game is changing. Every step of the way. We’re proud to power women’s football here in Northern Ireland.

SENIOR WOMEN HIT FOUR IN WIN OVER LATVIA The Northern Ireland senior women’s team marked their return to the National Football Stadium at Windsor Park with a scintillating victory. They had not played at the stadium for nine years – but they looked at home when registering a 4-0 win against Latvia Women last month. Goals from Louise McDaniel , Kirsty McGuinness, Marissa Callaghan and Rachel Furness (penalty) were enough to secure the fine victory in the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 qualifier played in front of more than 4000 fans in Belfast . Northern Ireland created several chances during the 90-plus minutes, just as they did in the 4-0 win over Luxembourg in their opening European Qualifying Group D fixture, and they could have scored more than four. Kirsty McGuinness, who was given the captain’s armband for the night as she won her 50th cap for Northern Ireland, was immediately on the front foot , running at the Latvian defence. Latvia attacker Olga Sevcova, who was looking dangerous down the left , broke clear on 17 minutes and Northern Ireland keeper Jackie Burns produced a fine stop from her low drive. McDaniel scooped a shot over the top before Lauren Wade fired another shot above the bar. On 35 minutes Sarah McFadden met a McGuinness cross and her looping header hit the top of the bar.

Words: Nigel Tilson

On the stroke of half-time Furness played a superb crossfield ball in behind the Latvian defence to the onrushing Wade, however she screwed her shot wide of the far post . The temporary skipper fed regular captain Callaghan just after the restart but her shot slid wide of the upright . Minutes later Northern Ireland took the lead. Callaghan had a shot blocked but the rebound fell to McDaniel and she drilled the ball into the top corner. It was her first goal at senior international level . On 65 minutes McGuinness grabbed Northern Ireland’s second with a lovely finish. She was played in by Callaghan and drew the keeper before firing a shot low into the far corner. It was a great way to mark her 50-cap milestone. Northern Ireland made it three on 78 minutes when Demi Vance’s superb cross from the left was chested home by Callaghan from close range. The girls in green and white made it 4-0 four minutes later from the spot . The penalty, awarded when Latvia midfielder Karline Miksone handled a Callaghan drive, was hammered into the net by Furness. Northern Ireland: Jacqueline Burns, Demi Vance, Sarah McFadden, Laura Rafferty, Louise McDaniel , Chloe McCarron, Marissa Callaghan, Lauren Wade, Rachel Furness, Kirsty McGuinness (captain) , Kerry Beattie. Substitutes: (used) Rebecca McKenna, Caragh Milligan, Kelsie Burrows, Danielle Maxwell , Ciara Watling; (unused) Becky F laherty (GK) ,
