SPORTS TEAMS

Boys Hockey Season Report The 2024–25 hockey season was another exciting and rewarding year for Grosvenor Grammar School, with strong performances, individual milestones, and continued progress across all teams.

The 1st XI led the way with two major achievements. They lifted the McCullough Cup Tier B following an excellent 3–1 win over Methodist College, Belfast in the final, before going on to retain the Burney Plate with a determined victory against Kilkeel High School. Winning this trophy for the second year in a row reflects the team’s commitment, resilience, and continuous improvement. The 2nd XI also enjoyed a competitive season and reached the semi-finals of their cup competition, where they were narrowly defeated 2–0 by a strong Wallace High School side. Their progress this year was a testament to the depth of talent and hard work within the senior squads. At junior level, the U13 and U14 teams showed great promise with solid cup and plate runs. While they were unable to secure silverware this time around, their performances laid strong foundations for future success, and the experience gained will undoubtedly serve them well in the years ahead. Individually, we are extremely proud of those players who represented Ulster Hockey through various talent development programmes. A particular highlight was James Shields, who represented Ulster U19s in a series against Wales and marked the occasion by scoring a goal. None of this would be possible without the dedication and expertise of our coaching team. Sincere thanks

must go to Mr Donnell and Mr Young, as well as our fantastic past pupil coaches: Andrew Kelly, Harry McMullan, Matthew Vincent, Charlie McKeown, Lewis Smyth, Scott Mackey, and Peter Robson. Their commitment and enthusiasm are the driving force behind our hockey programme. We now look ahead with enthusiasm to the 2025–26 season, determined to build on this year’s progress, strive for further success, and—most importantly— continue to enjoy the sport we love.

Mr M Nelson
